Afternoon Tea at Bethshan Nursing Home

Yesterday saw Her Majesty The Queen celebrate her 'official' birthday and we wanted to celebrate with her. We had a delicious afternoon tea fit for a Queen and celebrated with all things 'British'.

Our staff

The staff organised a beautiful afternoon tea, decorated the home & got into the party spirit. Our residents, staff and visitors alike, all had a wonderful afternoon!!

But, why does the Queen have two birthdays?

Well, the tradition was started George II in 1748 and owes its origins to the ageless problem of the British weather. George II was born in November but wasn't keen on celebrating his birthday in the winter, deeming it too cold for the for his annual birthday parade.

So instead, he combined his birthday celebration with an annual spring military parade known as Trooping the Colour, in which regiments displayed their flags or "colours" so soldiers would be familiar with them.

It is a tradition that has continued to this day. All British sovereigns are given the option of having an "official" birthday, and because the Queen's real birthday is on April 21, she has stuck with the tradition of celebrating in June.

Well, whatever the reason, we are happy to celebrate the anniversary of her birth and her 'official' birthday, any excuse for afternoon tea, what do you say?
